Our Church Roots

Methodism in Penn Township began in 1797 when Robert Brown settled here and held the first class meetings in his log cabin and oak grove.

In 1839, Rev. Rathburn re-organized this class and appointed Robert Brown class leader.

The first church building of the Brownsdale Methodist Episcopal congregation was completed and dedicated in 1860 on a piece of land a short distance south of the village of Brownsdale.

In 1920, the original church building was torn down, and ground was broken for the new church at Nixon Station, 6 miles south of Butler. This new church was dedicated on
March 29, 1925.

In 1956, Brownsdale Church became a station appointment.

The name Brownsdale Church was changed to Nixon Methodist Church in 1965, due to its location in the village of Nixon.

On April 25, 1966, the Brown Christian Education Building was dedicated.

The Church's name was changed to Nixon United Methodist Church in 1968.

The parsonage was dismanteled in 1973.

In 1993, the new entryway into the church, housing a beautiful stained glass window, was dedicated.
